Are Split-Level Dispatch Consoles Really Superior? – Part 2

To recap, I don’t believe that a dispatch console with a split-level desktop and separately controlled power adjustment is as practical, or ergonomic as a power adjustable flat desktop.

I favor a full-lift system with a single flat, deep desktop with a steel integrated slatwall and adjustable monitor arms. This approach provides maximum adjustability of the monitors and eliminates the pinch point dangers inherent when movable surfaces meet, or cross. Lifting and lowering the entire dispatch console maintains the relationship between the operator and his tools throughout the transition from sit to stand. Stored CPUs and integrated peripherals move up and down with the console significantly reducing stress on the cables. Lifting the entire dispatch console also reduces bending to reach stationary drawers and equipment, and thus puts everything in easy reach of the operator.

With a full-lift dispatch furniture and a single flat desktop design, the CPUs are stored in the base enclosure. They are racked and attached to individual doors that swing from the front or the rear of the console so that the CPUs move with the console.

Unlike the linear actuator lifts necessary for split-level adjustability, a fully hydraulic lifting system is immune to weight distribution problems. The adjustable legs are imbedded in the sidewalls of the consoles and all wires are safely shielded from accidental snagging. The result is a rugged and versatile sit-stand console that doesn’t encroach on valuable leg space and maximizes the amount of useable desktop space. An unexpected benefit of a full-lift console is the ability to raise it for easy cleaning underneath. This may not seem so important, but if your dispatch console is in an industrial environment, easy cleaning takes on a whole new meaning.

Simply, the idea that one would trade a single adjustable desktop and all that space for a separately adjustable surface isn’t practical, or ergonomically sound. Look for examples of our full-lift dispatch furniture at controlroomsusa.com and ask me for a solution that meets your specific needs.
