Standing Room Only Revisited

I recently did an entry on how much I liked my office desk with an electrical lift that allows me to stand while working. Well, I should have added that something else became evident immediately and that’s the relative position of the monitor to the keyboard. I lifted the desktop with keyboard to a comfortable working height; however I found that I also had to lift the monitor to a comfortable height. In order to do this, I placed all manner of “things” under the monitor. Well, that worked out all right, but then when I lowered the desktop to a comfortable sitting height, the monitor was too high.

So, I’m back to what I’ve been saying to my prospective customers for years. If they are interested in a control room console or dispatch furniture with a power assisted lift, then the keyboard height isn’t the only thing to consider; it’s the monitor height too. However, this issue is easily resolved with an adjustable monitor arm that allows you to position the monitor where you want it in relation to the keyboard height. There is another benefit to an adjustable monitor arm and that’s the desktop space that it frees-up under the monitor when the unnecessary monitor stand in front of the keyboard is removed. In conclusion, if you intend to buy a control room console or dispatch furniture with lifting desktop, be sure to plan for adjustable monitor arms to go with it. Then you’ll have the best ergonomic solution when adjusting the desktop to any height. And yes, my adjustable monitor arm is in the mail and should arrive any day.
